Upon device launch, the Microsoft Surface tablet's Internet Explorer 10 browser was equipped to support Flash playback on only a small handful of approved websites. According to Microsoft, this limitation was due to performance and battery life issues caused by Flash-enabled sites that were incompatible with the Windows touch-screen technology. A March 2013 system update reversed the restriction -- and full Flash functionality is now available with the Internet Explorer 11 browser available on all Surface tablets.
Some Limitations
From time to time, you may come across a website that still presents Flash limitations. For example, a drop-down menu may fail to pop up or a Flash-enabled game may require you to install incompatible plugins. While some sites simply won't work properly on a mobile device, the limitation may simply be the result of a missing update that failed to install on the Surface.
Checking for Updates
When updates become available, they're typically installed automatically, but you can manually check for updates as well. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen and select 'Settings.' Tap 'Change PC Settings,' 'Update and Recovery,' and then tap 'Windows Update.' Choose 'Check Now' and wait a few moments for the device to communicate with Microsoft's servers. If an update is available, tap 'View Details' and follow the prompts for installation.
